A GROUP of travellers have pitched up on a council-owned park in Taunton.

A number of caravans and a car are still parked up on Eastwick Park, in Priorswood.

One woman was seen hanging out washing outside one of the vans.

A spokeswoman for Somerset West and Taunton Council said: "When dealing with unauthorised encampments on SWT land, the council has an agreed procedure to follow.

"It also has obligations to the travellers in respect of assessing health and housing needs.

"First notices and a welfare questionnaire have been delivered to the caravans currently occupying the council-owned playing field in Taunton.

"This notice advises the group they are occupying land without permission or consent and instructs them to leave within 24 hours.

"We are working actively with Avon and Somerset Police and other multi-agency partners to keep disruption to amenities and services to a minimum."

A number of travellers set up camp at the Gateway Park and Ride site at Ruishton last week, causing the service to be shut down for a period. It is now up and running again.
