THREE West Somerset schools have successfully bid for Government cash for much needed maintenance work.

Danesfield School in Williton and Minehead Middle School have received grants for replacement windows while the West Somerset College will get funding for roof maintenance.

West Somerset MP Ian Liddell-Grainger welcomed the allocations which came from the Condition Improvement Fund which provides grants to help keep buildings safe and in good order.

Mr Liddell-Grainger said he was pleased the importance of repair and renewal schemes had been recognised.

“There wasn’t enough money to go round for all the requests that were made to the fund – there never is,” he said.

“The Government was faced with bids for £1.4 billion for 4,500 projects not covered by normal capital funding but has only been able to allocate £433 million.

“But at least this is recognition by the Government that our ageing schools estate is in need of extra help and I would encourage schools in need of help to apply."
