A MAN was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and false imprisonment after an incident which saw armed police descend on a residential Taunton street.

The arrest came after police were called to an incident in the Outer Circle area of Taunton at around 1.30pm on Friday (March 15).

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: "There was a suggestion that there was a weapon involved so armed officers were deployed as part of the police response.

"We understand the police presence caused some disruption and concern, especially with a school nearby, and would like to reassure the community that the school was only advised to keep the children inside as a precaution.

"There was no wider threat. No one was injured in the incident."

He added a man in his thirties was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and false imprisonment after the incident.

He has since been released under investigation.
