THE family of a York man will mark the first anniversary of his death in a skiing accident with a major fundraising event and the unveiling of a plaque at a city centre bar at the weekend.

The private party will be staged on Sunday night at Kennedy’s Bar & Restaurant in Little Stonegate, which is run by Jordan Waugh’s mother Karen.

She said it was intended to raise money to help disadvantaged young people take part in the sports and adventures which Jordan used to love.

Jordan, 23, died on February 24 last year after falling down a steep, rocky slope while skiing off-piste in the Alps.

A Coroner concluded last month that he died accidentally after suffering multiple injuries in the fall, which happened last February at the French ski resort of Alpe d’Huez.

Karen’s mother paid an emotional tribute at the inquest to her “kind and really loving” son, saying: “He was a truly incredible boy – he was every parent’s dream.”

Six hundred people packed York Minster’s Quire for a funeral and thanksgiving service for his life last March.

About 300 colleagues, relatives and friends - from school, university and cadets - are set to attend the invitation-only event this Sunday.

Karen said there would be live music by The Mothers, whose guitarist helped Jordan with guitar lessons - with Jordan becoming a keen guitarist - and there would be a fun casino with prizes.

A stainless steel plaque, situated on a mahogany background, would also be unveiled by the side of the bar.

She said the plaque’s wording was intended to reflect Jordan’s life and love of adventure, and his kind and loving nature.

She said it read: “In memory of Jordan Waugh. Be more Jordan. Aim high, a life full of adventure. Radiate kindness, your smile is contagious.Make your love count. Be open to wonder. Remember me. I’ll push you onwards.”

She said Jordan had studied international sports and sports management at university and the fundraising was intended to ensure underprivileged children could take part in the sporting activities which he had loved, such as skiing, along with hockey and football.

She added that if the fundraising went well, a charity might be set up in Jordan’s name at a later date.
