Newport is losing another long-term city centre retailer when H Samuel on Commercial Street closes tomorrow.

The national jewellery chain, which has had a shop in Newport for many years, has confirmed the closure of the Newport branch but said the closure 'bears no reflection upon the future plans of the Signet business estate, which H Samuel is part of, overall within the UK'.

A spokesman said: "We continually re-assess our portfolio of stores on a store by store basis, particularly when individual store leases come up for renewal.

"We are sorry to be leaving 173 Commercial Street.

"However we do have an H Samuel store 15 minutes away at 12-14 South Walk, Cwmbran and a wide online offering."

It is not known how many staff are affected or whether they will moved to other stores.

The closure follows Wildings and Tog 24 and the imminent closure of Mothercare in two weeks.

Robin Hall, MD of Kymin, on Bridge Street, Newport and a board member of Newport Now Business Improvement District, said: “It is sad to hear that H Samuel is closing.

"It is a business, which along with Wildings, was an established business in the city centre. The closing of the two businesses will leave a bit of a gap in that part of the city. However the opening of the new 163-bed Chartist Tower hotel in the summer will add vigour to the city centre.

"The new hotel will undoubtedly be a catalyst for change in Newport and hopefully act as a magnet, attracting new businesses and perhaps into the spaces left vacant by the closing of H Samuel and others.”
