COMMUTERS were caught up in tailbacks this morning after a firm failed to remove temporary traffic lights on time.

An inspector went to the scene near the Chelston roundabout, on the outskirts of Wellington, and ordered the firm responsible to remove the lights.

A commuter heading to Taunton said irate motorists complained of hold ups in the area.

And ealier this morning Travel Somerset tweeted: "#A38 Wellington: We've been made aware of temporary lights at Chelston affecting traffic travelling between Taunton and Wellington.

"We don't have a notice for these works so we've sent a streetworks inspector to investigate."

A spokesman for Somerset County Council said the lights have since been taken away.

He said: "We understand temporary traffic lights near the Chelston roundabout were left in place following planned street light works on Thursday.

"These have now been removed and we’re investigating why they were not removed sooner."
