A CROWD of more than 300 people came to pay their respects to their friend and colleague James Huxtable in the inaugural memorial match held at Taunton RFC's Commsplus Stadium on Saturday, writes Andrew Fielding.

The first ever Heathfield Community School former students XV (a band of brothers made up of James' friends) came up against Belsize RFC (James' club from London) in an excellent game played in memory of 'Hux', who passed away in March at the age of 24.

The game was divided up into four quarters, so players could stop for oxygen and enjoy the occasion.

Belsize took an early lead, through a catch and drive, only for Joel Conlon to be put in the corner and the try to be converted.

It was then nip and tuck with Belsize seizing the lead 10-7 at half-time.

The Heathfield side took control of the third quarter and scored three impressive tries through Joe Bussell, Tom Popham and Sam Hitchens and went into the final quarter 24-10 ahead.

Belsize threw everything at the former students and reduced the deficit to four points, only to be denied by the ref Mr. Neil Daniels' final whistle.

The game exceeded expectations and was warmly appreciated by the crowd.

After the game, fitting tributes were made to James, who was loved by all he met, and lasting memories were shared over a few well earned pints.

A raffle and auction were held with proceeds going to the wooden spoon society.

Thanks go to all involve and to Taunton RFC for hosting such a fitting tribute to a top class young man.
