A DETERMINED girl with diabetes is pushing herself to the limit on a marathon walk in a bid to help find a cure for the condition.

Millie Gibson, aged 11, is crossing 12 of London's main bridges in a ten-mile challenge on Sunday in aid of Diabetes UK and to raise awareness of the condition.

Millie will be dressed as a unicorn and wearing a tutu as she tackles the demanding course with her mum, Jo Gibson, and family friend, Jo Kyte, as well as hundreds of other participants.

The event starts at Battersea Park and takes in some of the capital's iconic landmarks before finishing by crossing Tower Bridge.

Millie, who started at Heathfield Community School this month, said: "I'm looking forward to it.

"I like walking, even though I get tired sometimes.

"I want to raise £1,000 for Diabetes UK to help find a cure. I really want to reach my target.

"Diabetes is a condition that affects lots of people and I hope one day lots of people like me will no longer need daily injections."

It will be the third year that Mille, who lives in Holford Road, Taunton, has taken part in the walk.

Mrs Gibson said her daughter is fit as she enjoys the outdoor life and does a lot of horse riding.

"Having said that, exercise can affect her sugar levels, so we have to make sure she has the correct levels of insulin," added Mrs Gibson.

"She was diagnosed with type one diabetes when she was four and has to have injections every time she eats, which can be four or five times a day."

Millie and her mum have made a number of posters appealing for support which have been put up in local shops.
