AUTUMN is officially upon us - but one year later, it's still not clear when plans to pedestrianise Taunton will take place.

Plans to change access to three key streets in the town were announced in January 2017.

The pedestrianisation scheme from Taunton Deane Borough Council would see East Street closed to all traffic except buses and cyclists, Hammet Street closed to vehicles during the day, and St James Street for pedestrians only.

The Deane had originally intended to roll out an 18-month trial of the plans in autumn 2017, with scope to become permanent in 2019.

But the authority delayed the start of the trial as it claimed retailers had stated they did not want the trial to start in the run up to Christmas.

RELATD: Taunton town centre pedestrianisation - traffic to be barred from three streets

In January of this year, a TDBC spokesman said the trial was set to begin in 'early 2018' - but again, it did not happen.

Now, the authority has returned to its plans to give details of the scheme this autumn, one year on from its original start date.

A TDBC spokesperson said: “The Public Space Improvement Project will make Taunton town centre more pedestrian friendly, with improved air quality and cycle routes, in line with our garden town status.

"The council has been working with partners to refine the scheme which will make changes in St James Street, Hammet Street and East Street, in response to comments received during the consultation last year.

"Details are being finalised and will be shared this autumn."
