MEMBERS of a caravan club have bought two life-saving devices for Brean after one of their member's suffered a heart attack.

Members of BSC Caravanners raised more than £3,000 to buy the defibrillators which were declared open on Saturday (September 15) at Beachside Holiday Park and at Brean Village Hall.

The group was inspired to raise the funds after one of their members, Paul Turner, suffered a heart attack last year.

Martin Mills, 44, founder of BSC Caravanners, said: "It's a huge relief to see the new defibrillators in place.

"It's been a long process between first thoughts and the final step of accreditation with the ambulance service and we are so happy they are finally in.

"After Paul had a heart attack we were so surprised to learn that there was only one public access defibrillator in Brean located at Diamond Farm.

"As a result we raised funds for two of the units but we also have a third defibrillator which was kindly donated to us.

"BSC has retained it for short term loan use to provide a temporary replacement if a defibrillator is out of action for any reason.

"Our hope is they will never be needed but the sad reality is that they will.

"Our dream is that they will save lives for those in need."

Martin said the group has plans to host another fundraiser so two more defibrillators can be installed in the town next year.

"I can't help but feel incredibly proud of BSC's members," Martin said.

"They truly are an amazing group of people with compassion for each other and an absolute love for Brean.

"Our members and local businesses have been fantastically supportive.

"We can't thank them enough, without their support this would not have been possible.

"I really hope these machines benefit Brean.

"We have seen a number of deaths amongst holiday makers over the years, if these machines save just one person then our efforts have been worthwhile.

"These defibrillators can save lives and we hope to repeat our fundraiser next season to provide another two units for Brean."
