Boxing champ throws weight behind Highbridge campaign

2:36pm Monday 10th September 2007

A BOXING world champion has backed a campaign to provide suitable gym premises for a Highbridge boxing club.

Roger Cross, a coach from the King Alfred amateur boxing club, originally approached the town council for help over a year ago, and then returned in June for round two.

Having received no feedback, and with concern mounting over the lack of facilities, the group has decided to take matters into itsown hands.

Roger, along with help from secretary Gill White, put together a 2,000-strong petition with support from club president and World Cruiserweight Champion Enzo Maccarinelli.

"We hope the petition will show them we mean business," Roger said.

"The council seem content to build flats upon flats in Highbridge - but when it comes to provide a facility for youngsters, they don't want to know."

Professional fighter Macarinelli said: "I support this club, which has been running for nine years, because they have taken many young girls and boys off the streets.

"One of their lads has turned professional, and another has two national titles - the worth of this club speaks for itself.

"The gym they have is too small, and they are having to turn youngsters away, and where do they go? Probably on your street corner."

Current member, Aaron Stokes, added: "About a year ago I was verbally abused at school because I was overweight.

"Then I joined the club, and it gave me belief in myself - so I am asking local councillors to do something and support the club."

Cllr John Morgan defended the authority saying it doesn't have any land available, and Sedgemoor District Council owns the buildings.

"We would be willing to put the case before the district council, but we don't have the capabilities to help," he said.

If you can help, contact Roger Cross on 01278-794087, or Gill White on 01278-785667.
