IT'S been a successful summer for West Somerset Railway as an increase on last year's figures has been reported.

The number of passengers has increased by nearly two per cent compared to the number of users during 2017.

A highlight was two record-breaking Wednesdays during August with more than 1,500 visitors.

“It’s been a very busy summer so far and it is thanks to our team, most of whom give up their time freely as volunteers,” said Paul Conibeare, general manager of West Somerset Railway.

“Two of our Wednesdays in August broke records, with visitors in excess of 1,600.

"With over 20 miles of scenery and 10 lovingly kept stations along the line, the West Somerset Railway continues to draw the crowds."

Along the WSR track is ten stations, each their own destination. Many visitors on the steam train make their way to Minehead Bay, but there are also opportunities to travel to Dunster Castle, Cleve Abbey at Washford, Doniford Farm Park and Watchet.

Looking ahead, the railway has a busy diary of events for September with children’s character Gruffalo visiting Minehead on September 8, a 1940s weekend on the 15 and 16, and the Autumn Steam Gala from 27 to 30, with opportunities to ride behind locomotives visiting from other heritage railways.

Mr Conibeare puts part of this year's success down to the introduction of the West Somerset Railway annual pass.

The pass was launched at the end of June and has been purchased 200 times so far.

He added: “It’s great to be able to welcome customers back on to our steam trains – especially local residents and those looking for a regular day out.

"Already, we are planning for a busy December with festive tickets, already on sale."
