SPAXTON’S village shop shows the true meaning of community spirit and has been nominated for a prestigious award.

The Spaxton Community Stores is one of the finalists in the Council for the Protection of Rural England’s competition to find Somerset’s best village shop.

The judges will be visiting the store later in the year to go give it the once over.

Karen Dennis, manager of the store, said: “This is a great tribute to the volunteers and community who have together made our shop what it is.

“Another indication that the shop’s fame has spread beyond out county is that a Hertfordshire couple who recently visited us while they were staying with a friend, are close to establishing their own community shop.

“They went away saying we were an excellent role model for them and were particularly impressed by the layout of the shop and how we supported our volunteers.”

The store was purpose built after a campaign by residents and the parish council, who own shares in the business.

The Community Stores is run by the manager Karen Dennis and a team of 52 volunteers who dedicate their time to keeping the store open and thriving.

“It is really a lifeline for this village,” Mrs Dennis said.

“If we did not have this, the nearest shop would be in Nether Stowey or Cannington - and as there is no bus service so vulnerable residents who are unable to drive would be really stumped.

“The Post Office service has also proved a success with many local businesses using the service regularly, rather than having to travel to Bridgwater.”

The store is currently on the hunt for a paid part-time bookkeeper to work 15 to 20 hours a week.
