BOSSES at New Look have announced its Burnham-on-Sea store will be closing in September.

The shop, which is located on High Street, confirmed it will be closing its doors on September 2.

The news comes after the fashion retailer released a statement in March confirming plans to close some of its existing stores due to poor trading performance.

At the time the Burnham store was not mentioned in the list of stores that were set to close, but the firm’s head office confirmed the closure this week.

Alistair McGeorge, executive chairman of New Look, said: "Given our challenged trading performance and over-rented UK store estate, we are having to take tough but necessary actions to reduce our fixed cost base and restore long-term profitability."

The news has caused widespread disappointment across the town, but the town council says it's working hard to encourage shops into the area.

A spokesman for Burnham and Highbridge Town Council said: "It is a real shame to see another premises on the High Street closing its doors.

"New Look is particularly popular with young people and we are doing our very best and working with the Chamber of Trade to encourage locals and visitors to spend time and money in our local shops to help boost our local economy.

"It seems that New Look is another casualty in the current trend of online shopping. The town council and Chambers of Trade for both Burnham-on-Sea and for Highbridge are holding ongoing meetings with Sedgemoor District Council to explore the challenges for our local businesses and look at options to improve and support our traders."
