A Highbridge family had a lucky escape after a fire broke out in their home - despite them not having a working smoke detector.

Two fire crews from Burnham-on-Sea rushed to the property on Elder Close at 10.54pm on Wednesday (July 25) after one of the occupants reported there was a fire in one of the bedrooms.

Fortunately, one of the property owners smelt smoke and raised the alarm so that everyone could get out safely.

Firefighters arrived on the scene within minutes and entered the property to locate the fire which was in the first floor bedroom of the semi-detached property.

By 11.16pm crews advised the fire was extinguished and they used two breathing apparatus wearers and one hose reel jet to fight the fire.

But when firefighters checked for signs of fire spread with a thermal imaging camera they confirmed the fire was out at 11.32pm.

Firefighters isolated the utilities, made the scene safe and used a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear the property of smoke.

A spokesman for Burnham Fire Station no was injured in the incident and urged residents to check their smoke alarms.

"Unfortunately there was no working smoke detectors in this house," the spokesman said.

"The owners were lucky to have smelt the smoke and raise the alarm, if this happened during the night could of been a different outcome.

"It only takes seconds to test your smoke alarms."
