A FORMER police officer has turned his passion for plants into a business after winning the People's Choice Award at the Royal Bath and West Show for the second year running.

Pete Stainer, 57, from Highbridge, recently completed a two year horticultural course at Bridgwater and Taunton College and entered the competition on its behalf.

His entry titled, 'Town meets Country', was a garden of two halves - one half was a formal garden and the other half was a countryside setting.

The two gardens were separated by a fence with an arch connecting them, which he made from materials he got from Mark-based timber products supplier, Somerlap.

The finished garden clearly resonated with visitors to the show as it won the ‘People’s Choice’ Award and a silver gilt from the show's judges.

Speaking after the awards, Pete said he is grateful for all the support he has received.

“Taking part in the Royal Bath and West Show twice has been the highlight of my horticultural course at Bridgwater & Taunton College," Pete said.

"These opportunities would not have been possible without the support and assistance of the college, and sponsors such as Somerlap.”

Pete and his wife, Sheila, 62, who has also completed a horticultural course, have launched their own gardening business, Simply Gardening and Pete says he is excited for the future.

“Our business is now open and we already have clients in Burnham-on-Sea, Mark, and East and West Huntspill, who have come to us through word-of-mouth.

"We serve quite a niche market for people such as the elderly who need garden maintenance for a couple of hours a week, rather than landscapers.

"Our business is about lifestyle, and we’re helping people who just need assistance to keep their gardens looking good.”

Kevin Bond, managing director of Somerlap, said he hopes Pete and Sheila have success in their new business.

“Pete’s story proves that you can change career at any age.

"We were delighted to supply the items which he needed to complete his garden, and wish him every success with his new business venture.
