A MAN whose dog consumed the synthetic drug Spice has been banned from owning dogs for five years.

Luke Scarley, 25, of no fixed address, admitted at Taunton Magistrates' Court failing to ensure his dogs, Lola and Kia, were protected from suffering.

Kia was found to have ingested the Class B drug at a house in Hilly Park, Norton Fitzwarren, in November 2017.

RSPCA inspector Jo Daniel, who investigated, said the dog was left unco-ordinated as a result of consuming the chemical she had picked up in her owner’s home.

She added: “Sadly Scarley’s chaotic lifestyle saw Kia suffer as a result of the consuming of drugs.

"During the investigation Lola was also found to have needed veterinary attention following her consumption of a prescription drug and was subsequently seized.

“It’s saddening that the dogs were repeatedly exposed to a risk they were unable to escape because of their owner’s pattern of behaviour.

“There is no suggestion he intended to harm his dogs but he had a lack of ability to meet their need to be safe from harm.

“We always encourage pet owners who suspect that an animal has been poisoned by a substance to take their pet to a vet immediately.”

Scarley was also ordered to carry out 80 hours community service and pay a £80 victim surcharge when he appeared in court on Tuesday (July 3).
