A DEVOTED Brent knoll couple who celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary said they were 'lucky' to have met each other.

Bob Murray, 87 and his wife, Doreen, 84, first met at a dance in London after the war in 1950 where Bob was stationed as a soldier.

The couple, who have two children, two grandchildren and a great-grandchild on the way, got married in London on June 27, 1953 before spending their honeymoon in Beer in Devon.

Doreen said she was first attracted to Bob as she thought he was 'handsome' when she met him at the dance.

"I met Bob at a post office dance just after the war, he was in the army and I was just 16 when I met him," Doreen said.

"I thought he was very handsome and we got talking and now here we are."

Doreen was born and raised in London and Bob in Kirkcaldy in Scotland.

They settled into married life in Edmonton in London shortly after getting married but moved to Brent Knoll in 1972 with their two daughters and Doreen's mother and have lived there ever since.

"I don't think there is a secret to a long and happy marriage," Doreen said.

"We are just lucky as we met each other, there is no magic formula to finding that person, its just luck.

"We have had such a wonderful life together and it's still going on.

"We are still very much in love, I wouldn't change any of it for the world."

To celebrate their blue sapphire anniversary the couple went for afternoon tea at The Alms House in Axbridge with their daughter on Thursday (June 28).

"We had a lovely time, the staff were so lovely and brought out a lovely cake for us," Doreen said.

"It was a lovely way to celebrate our anniversary."

Carlie Troy, the couple's eldest daughter, who lives in Burnham-on-Sea, said her parents are an 'inspiration' to her.

"Mum and Dad are really incredible and are both still enjoying life in the country – they love gardening and pop into Burnham every weekend to put a bet on the horses. They are simply an inspiration."
