HOPES to revitalise Burnham-on-Sea have been ignited.

Representatives from new project Burnham Evolution were at eat:Burnham food festival on Saturday (May 26) to gage public opinion on plans to breathe new life into the town.

Carla Modley, from Sedgemoor District Council, and district, town and county cllr Peter Clayton, manned the stall at the festival to explain the plans to make a ‘significant investment’ in the town.

The council team behind the project is at the consultation stage, before it prepares to submit an application for funding. The team was at the food fest handing out questionnaire forms.

The revitalisation would see enhancements to areas of the town such as the esplanade and the Princess Theatre.

A spokesman for Burnham and Highbridge Town Council said: “Burnham Evolution is a project led by the town council with support from Sedgemoor District Council, the local business community and Litter Free Somerset. The aim is to revitalise the town by providing enhancements to the Esplanade to make the seafront more attractive and welcoming for residents and visitors.

“The project will also include the renovation of the Princess Theatre which is a heavily used community space. Burnham residents will benefit from an increase in the number of people who spend time and money in the town as there will be more to see and do. We also hope that these improvements will restore a sense of civic pride in the community.

“The town council has engaged a consultant to prepare a business plan in order to apply for grants from the Coastal Community and Hinkley funds. This will be a significant investment to enhance the town and make it a better place to live, work and visit.”
