A RESCUE mission was put in place to aid a woman who had potentially broken her ankle while walking with her daughter along Brean Down.

Burnham Coastguard Rescue Team sent teams to the scene at 2.30pm on Saturday (May 26).

After making the walk from the bottom of Brean Down and along the top the two ladies we heading down the hill towards the old fort on the end.

As they descended the hill one of the ladies slipped and fell, injuring her ankle.

A spokesman said: "When we arrived on scene her ankle had started to swell, we administered some first aid and secured her ankle.

"Although she was in pain she was in good spirits and able to enjoy some world famous Burnham Coastguard banter.

"Weston super Mare Coastguards were arriving on scene and placed their vehicle at the bottom of the slope.

"Once we had stabilised her foot we decided the best option was to carry her via stretcher down the fairly steep slope to the awaiting Weston Coastguard truck."

The injured woman was taken to be seen by ambulance crews.

The spokesman added: "With a great team working, the lady was helped in to the truck and whisked off to the National Trust Cafe at the base of the Down where an Ambulance had just arrived.

"Hopefully it isn't anything to bad and the lady will be 100 per cent again soon, she put a brave face on what was a painful injury but never stopped smiling.

"As always it was good to catch up with the Weston team again.

"If you are out and about along the coast and you see someone in difficulty, danger or distress, dial 999 and ask for the coastguards."
