A GYM in Dulverton has been forced to close after a fire caused severe damage.

The 1610 Exmoor Fitness Centre on Rosemary Lane has confirmed it's closure after a fire broke out at around 10.20am yesterday (May 9).

The fire had broken out in the roof space of a two-storey hall which houses the gym and the Parish Rooms. On arrival the crews confirmed the building was heavily smoke logged.

A member of staff at the gym noticed the smoke and called the emergency services.

A spokesman said: "1610 which manages the Exmoor Fitness Centre in Dulverton in West Somerset has closed the centre following a fire which substantially damaged the ceiling of the ground floor room of the building in Rosemary Lane.

"A member of 1610 staff who was the only person on site noticed smoke coming from the ceiling of the ground floor room and the emergency services were immediately called to attend the scene.

"A thorough check was carried out to ensure that no one else was in the building before Devon and Somerset Fire Service arrived."

The gym spokesman said here has been substantial damage to the ceiling, spoke damage to the office and the changing rooms. Two exercise bikes were also damaged.

The centre will have to remain closed for the time being and 1610 will be informing members about the temporary closure and will also be looking for an alternative venue where it can operate exercise classes and resume services as quickly as possible.

The spokesman added that they would like to apologise for the inconvenience to members but will continue to keep them informed about developments at the centre.

It is believed the fire was caused by an electrical fault in the roof space.
