BURNHAM-on-Sea Coastguard said a couple who got their car stuck in the mud on Brean beach have learned a 'harsh lesson'.

The Brean beach warden raised the alarm at 7.36pm on Saturday, April 21 after they saw a car stuck in the mud a fair way out along the beach.

As thunder and lightning hit the county, a coastguard crew set off to help the couple as the tide was coming in fast.

BARB Search and Rescue were also tasked to see if they could winch the car out to safety.

When the coastguard arrived and spoke to the couple it was clear that they were not in danger.

Volunteers from BARB assessed the high end Mercedes Benz hire car but decided they couldn't beat the incoming tide and retrieve the car safely.

The car was left to be covered by the tide and was recovered on Sunday (April 22).

A spokesman for Burnham-on-Sea Coastguard, said: "The people involved were not local to the area and had hired the car for a day trip.

"A harsh lesson to learn for this couple who were very apologetic for becoming stuck and felt bad for having to call us out.

"We are all human and can easily find ourselves in difficulty.and calling us quickly can make a huge difference.

"If you drive on any beach, stick to the top end of the beach where the sand is hard and do not drive down towards the water."

If you see anyone in difficulty, danger or distress along the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
