Western Counties West
Burnham-on-Sea 38, Truro 27

BURNHAM finally produced the fast, furious display that they are capable of to see off Truro in their final home match of the season.

Against a side which was physically much larger, Burnham’s defensive efforts were eventually what sealed the match for them.

Richard Muskett led the way with his no-nonsense tackling inspiring his teammates to step up to the mark.

Within the first four minutes, Sammy Lewis sent a speculative grubber kick behind Truro’s back line and then raced forward to scramble over the line and touch down out wide on the left wing.

Tim Piper stepped up for the conversion to make it 7-0.

Five minutes later, the ball was sent out wide for Felix Grandfield to round the last man and cross the line, Piper adding the extras.

Truro scored a pushover try with their much heavier pack but, just before half-time, Burnham were awarded a penalty on Truro’s 10 metre line converted by Piper with consummate ease.

From the restart, Truro showed their mettle and, after exerting pressure on Burnham’s forwards, they rumbled over the line.

Three minutes later Burnham retaliated when Piper burst through the middle before releasing Sam Everett to streak under the posts - Piper added the extras.

Back came Truro, good pressure and movement resulting in a try out wide to make it 24-15.

Burnham kept up their defensive effort, gaining another turnover, a quick ball out to Pike, and three successful phases allowing Adam Peters to shoot through a gap to score under the posts.

Five minutes later, good lineout ball followed by smart offloading enabled Piper to drift through before finding a marauding Jude Donnelly to go in under the posts.

Truro were not finished yet, snatching two tries and a conversion in the last few minutes to bring the final score to 38-27.

It was a stellar performance by Burnham, especially in defence.

Man of the match: Richard Muskett

Burnham skipper Ross McKechan said: “We scored some really good tries and showed what we can do.

“The young lads really stepped up again and we had a real desire to finish well.”

The last game of the season is away to Kingsbridge on Saturday - all are welcome to join the bus leaving the BASC Ground at 11am.
