Clevedon United 2, Middlezoy Rovers 1

MIDDLEZOY Rovers travelled to Clevedon on Saturday knowing that a win could take them up to second in the table.

But they were frustrated by a well organised Clevedon side that set up 5-4-1, looking to play on the break and defend from the halfway line playing down the hill in the first half.

The home keeper was in fine form, making saves to deny Callum Laird, Andy Smith and Jed Williams.

The hosts were relying on set-pieces and hitting Zoy on the break, with their lone striker doing very well in holding the ball up.

Zoy goalkeeper Greg Turner was called into action just before half time, making two smart saves as Clevedon grew into the game and frustrated the visitors, who were taking too many touches and not moving the ball fast enough to find a breakthrough.

Alex Clapp replaced Jake Horsey at half time due to injury, and Zoy started the second half at a much better pace.

They took the lead through a good passage of play, ending with with Williams sweeping the ball into the bottom corner at the far post.

There followed a discussion between the linesman and the referee, but the goal stood.

Adam Long replaced Williams on 60 minutes and started to link the play well, but the away side made the mistake of going for the second goal against a counter-attacking team, rather than being patient and waiting for the opposition to come forward and leave space in behind.

Zoy gave up possession deep into the Clevedon half, and a late run from midfield saw the ball rifled across Greg Turner by Frazer Linnett for an equaliser.

The visitors pushed hard and had various opportunities, falling to Dan Luce, Craig Wright and Long, but it remained 1-1.

On 85 minutes, Charlie Lintell looked to play the ball back to his keeper from the halfway line, but his backpass was intercepted, and Mike Purnell’s shot hit both posts and rolled into the net.

The hosts defended for the last five minutes, camped in their own half and continuing to frustrate Zoy.

Middlezoy team: Greg Turner, Callum Laird, Craig Wright, Tom Brown, Charlie Lintell, Dan Luce, Aaron Whaites, Andy Smith, Jed Williams, Jake Horsey, Jamie Temlett. Subs (all used): Alex Clapp, Adam Long, John Higgins.
