BURNHAM United AFC has launched a crowd funding campaign to raise £2,000 to improve security at the ground following a series of break-ins.

The club near Cassis Close in Burnham-on-Sea has been broken into by thieves three times in five weeks.

Club members were devastated just before Christmas after thieves damaged the club's door shutter, stole a Philips 54-inch TV, a Sharp 56-inch TV, smashed both the jukebox and fruit machine taking money from inside and emptied the float from the till as well as the penny jar.

The football club was targeted again by thieves on January 2.

The thieves once again damaged the shutter, smashed through the door window and destroyed the fruit machine which was only replaced in the last 10 days following the previous break-in.

But the club is looking to the future and has launched a crowd funding campaign to raise £2,000 to install new security gates around the club's door shutters, CCTV and security fencing around the building.

In a statement on their crowd funding page, a spokesman for Burnham United AFC, said: "We are seeking to increase the security at our premises by installing security gates around our current door shutters, CCTV and security fencing around the building after suffering three break in's in the last 5 weeks.

"These incidents has caused much distress affecting all users of the club and the small group of volunteers which spend countless hours running the club."

The football club has already raised £550 of its £2,000 target but said it the project will cost £10,000.

A spokesman for the club said they have already made a number of grant applications to raise the funds but say they must 'demonstrate their commitment' to the project by raising a proportion of the funds.

"After the first break in thanks to the support of the local community, local organisations, businesses and club members we were quickly able to get back on our feet and have invested in improving our alarm system which have stretched resources significantly," the spokesman said.

"By installing these items it would offer further security to our premises  which in conjunction with Burnham United Juniors FC was significantly upgraded in July 2016 after years of fundraising improving our Changing Facilities and Clubhouse for members, oppositions & for local community usage."

Anyone who contributes £20 will have their name listed on the clubhouse’s donation plague whereas a £200 donation will pay for a two-year pitch side advertising banner.
