New eye clinic will benefit all

A NEW £150,000 plus eye clinic at Burnham hospital is set to benefit scores of patients with optical problems from near and far.

The hospital's league of friends and Somerset Primary Care Trust have provided the bulk of the funding for the clinic, and all the latest diagnostic equipment to go with it.

David Wood, vice chairman of the trust, will be visiting the hospital on Friday (August 3) to officially open the new suite.

He said: "We are delighted with the generous support given to this project and it illustrates just how committed everyone has been to developing diagnostic services.

"We have the advantage of 13 community hospitals in Somerset, all of which are playing an essential role in delivering the community's health care."

Community hospital manager, Sian Teal, said: "Patients and staff are thrilled with the new suite, and we are very grateful to the league of friends for their contribution."

The new unit includes three consultation rooms, and special imaging equipment with capability of identifying children's eye problems at an early stage.

"This investment represents a very positive development for both patients and the community hospital," added Ms Teal.

Tony Deahl, chairman of the league of friends said: "The ophthalmic suite is exactly the sort of major project we want to support as it provides such great benefits to patients in the local community."

Burnham hospital currently holds six ophthalmic sessions per week.
