A POPULAR traffic free coastal cycle route could be extended to serve Burnham-on-Sea, Berrow and Brent Knoll if plans are approved.

Brean Down Way is a traffic free cycle path that runs between Brean and Weston-super-Mare.

Since it opened in April, it has been a hit with residents with more than with over 28,000 trips recorded in its first 7 weeks.

But calls have been made to extend the route to serve Berrow, Burnham-on-Sea and Brent Knoll as demand has soared.

Cllr Phil Harvey, Cllr Andy Brewer and Cllr Janet Keen met with John Grimshaw from Greenways and Cycleroutes Limited, who spearheaded the Brean Down Way project, to discuss plans to extend the route by creating a triangular circuit to join the three areas at a cost of £229,000.

Cllr Harvey said the talks were 'positive' and if approved, the new route would boost tourism.

"The meeting with Greenways went well.

"John Grimshaw outlined his proposals to us and we discussed the implications for Burnham and Highbridge and how best to proceed.

"If implemented, they would provide a triangular circuit from Brean to Brent Knoll to Burnham, and back to Brean which would be great both for tourism and for local people.

"This would fit in well with town council aspirations and the Neighbourhood Plan which encourages such links to the open country.

"We decided a report will come the town council - probably at the next full meeting in February though it could be the town projects committee in January - recommending support for the project.

"Janet Keen will also place it on the Cluster meeting agenda as it will need joint working with Berrow and Brent Knoll parish councils.

In a document outlining their proposals, Greenways and Cycleroutes said they are working with local people to bring these plans to fruition in the hope that they can open part of the route by next year.

"The works required for the Middle Street and Crooked Lane routes to Brent Knoll are considered as a potential early win which could be opened in 2018. The Berrow Coastal Path requires detailed negotiations with the Burnham and Berrow Golf Club.

"If their crucial support was forthcoming then the proposed route north and south of Berrow Church could be opened by 2019."
