BURNHAM-on-Sea Coastguard were called to assist in the search for a missing person in Weston-super-Mare.

Crews were called at 11.44pm last night (October 15) to assist Weston Coastguard in the search for the missing person who was thought to be vulnerable and at risk.

The team quickly made their way to the Grand Pier in Weston and met with Clevedon Coastguard, BARB Search and Rescue and the Fire Service Hovercraft.

Weston Coastguard then devised a search plan to find the missing person, who was last seen at the Grand Pier.

A spokesman for Burnham Coastguard said: "Firefly launched with coastguard Mud techs onboard and searched along the exposed mud along the beach and around the Grand Pier.

"Two mud techs from Burnham Coastguard climbed aboard the BARB Hovercraft who were asked to fly North of the pier and Knightstone Island and surrounding areas.

"Weston RNLI launched to cover the tideline from the water."

A Coastguard helicopter also scoured the coastline using search lights and thermal cameras in a bid to find the missing person.

But after hours of searching there was still no sign of the missing person.

"After covering all the search area requested we were stood down at 1.40 am by the U.K Coastguard ops room in Milford Haven and returned to Burnham Coastguard Station for a clean down of the mud equipment used," the spokesman added.

If you see anyone in difficulty along the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguards.
