PREPARATONS are well underway for Christmas in Langport.

The festivities start in earnest with the annual Christmas Fair and Fireworks on Saturday, December 2, with more than 40 stalls on Parrett Close around The Angel and Ridgway Hall - to book a pitch contact Kate Gibbins on kate.gibbins@sky.com or call 07767-310833.

There will also be music and entertainment from local bands and carol singers at the event from 2pm to 6.30pm, with many businesses will stay open until 6pm.

The town will be festooned with thousands of white lights, a theme that will stretch across the shop fronts.

The fair will be followed by a firework display and hog roast on Cocklemoor, by the River Parrett.

Langport's annual Best Dressed Window Competition will start on Saturday, December 2, with shoppers voting for their favourite displays being entered in a draw to win up to £50 in vouchers to spend in local businesses.

Langport Area Business Group chairman John Rice-Lewis said: "With so many independent businesses offering services and goods of the highest quality, there really are the sort of beautiful gifts and decorations that people would normally have to travel far and wide to find.

"We offer something for everybody, from children's toys, great gifts for your pets, Christmas meats and gorgeous little stocking fillers, right through to hand made art, colourful glass and ornaments and furniture for the home.

"Langport really is your local independent shopping destination to find those special and unique gifts and treats."

Meanwhile, the Christmas lights are going up in Langport on Sunday, November 26, from 8.30am - and the town council is calling on community spirited volunteers to help out.

People are being asked to give up a few hours or even the whole day to prepare the town for the festive season.

Anyone who can help should contact town clerk David Mears on 01458-259700 or e-mail townclerk@langport.life
