A CANCER survivor is taking part in a sponsored run to raise money for a liver disease charity after her daughter was diagnosed with the condition.

Sarah Fudge, a 44-year-old mum of three from Taunton, battled through breast cancer as well as supporting her daughter through an auto-immune liver disease.

Now Mrs Fudge is taking part in the Great South Run in October to raise money for the Children's Liver Disease Foundation.

Sarah's daughter, Lucy, was 14-years-old when she was diagnosed with the disease.

“It was such a worrying time for us,” she said.

“Lucy had been very poorly but no-one was sure what was wrong. When she was finally diagnosed we didn’t know what to expect as we didn’t know anyone else personally affected by this. I looked for information online and that’s how I came across CLDF. The information they sent us was so helpful, breaking things down to give us more understanding of her condition and telling us what help is available.

“This year Lucy has met many other young people with liver disease through CLDF’s Talk,Tell,Transform residential trip in which she made a film about her journey for others to watch. In August, she went along to a reunion with the friends she had made during that week and met other young people who had taken part in the same project previously."

“The transformation in Lucy’s confidence has been huge. She regularly keeps in touch with the young people she has met. Before this Lucy was very isolated and depressed. Now, even though there are days she may be affected by itching, one of the side effects of her condition, and extreme tiredness, she’s not letting her liver condition rule her life. She goes to college, rides a scooter, is learning to drive and is a regular runner, having completed a number of 10K races."

The run takes place on October 22 in Portsmouth. Sarah was encouraged by Lucy while she was recovering from her breast cancer surgery four years ago.

Sarah was hoping to raise £180, but has already nearly doubled her target. She hopes to raise as much as she can before the run takes place.

Alison Taylor, chief executive of Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, said: “CLDF is the only UK charity dedicated to fighting all childhood liver diseases, by providing information and emotional support, funds for research and a voice for all those affected.

In order to do this however, we rely entirely on voluntary donations so we are delighted to hear that Sarah has chosen to do the Great South Run for us.

The money she raises will enable us to continue making a difference to families like hers around the UK.
