SANDWICH giant Subway will open another branch in Bridgwater if new petrol station plans are approved.

The fast food chain famed for its footlongs hopes to open a branch as part of a potential redevelopment of Greenway Garage.

Plans have been submitted to Sedgemoor District Council to demolish the existing filling station in Quantock Road and to rebuild a new one with a sales building, Subway outlet, forecourt, canopy, 23 parking spaces and new underground fuel tanks.

Applicant Forelle Estates said the proposals will bring more than 20 new jobs to the area and want to redevelop the site because it is 'out-dated, inefficient and dilapidated.'

A spokesman for Forelle Estates said: "With one of the UK’s largest infrastructure projects progressing nearby (Hinkley Point C) and potentially a large sustainable urban extension to the north and east, the Greenway Garage facility will need to be operating as efficiently as possible with enhanced ancillary facilities more suited to the demand that these developments will create.

"Quantock Road is also a principal route to Minehead, which is a popular tourist destination year round.

"In terms of social sustainability, the principal benefit is the creation of jobs.

"These are jobs for local people, who will spend their wages in the local economy.

"Furthermore, the proposed development would provide an important service for passing motorists and nearby residents, the number of which may increase significantly over the coming years."

The application has previously been refused by Sedgemoor District Council due to a lack of information about the traffic impact the proposal could have.

A spokesman for Forelle Estates, said they have spent 'a great deal of time' working to fix the problem and have carried out a full transport assessment, which is included in the plans.

Comments are welcome on the application until September 9 after which time it will be considered by Sedgemoor District Council.
