A CONSTUCTION firm has started work on a £2.2 million theatre complex refurbishment project at Nuffield Health Taunton Hospital.

The Morgan Sindall Construction & Infastructure scheme involves the refurbishment of three areas at the hospital in Staplegrove, including a surgical theatre block, an endoscopy suite and a Grade II listed building.

Nuffield Health Taunton Hospital opened in 1974 and its theatre complex was originally designed to treat patients during the Falklands War in 1982.

The hospital currently has three theatres, principally specialising in orthopaedics and spinal services.

During the refurbishment project, Morgan Sindall will repair the external façade of the Grade II listed building and replace the roof of the theatre block.

The project team will also replace floors, walls and ceilings inside the theatres and upgrade the electrical and mechanical systems.

Nigel Whelan, area manager at Morgan Sindall, said: “We are delighted to be delivering these important renovations at Nuffield Health Taunton Hospital that will see the theatre complex transformed into a modern, fit-for-purpose surgical facility.

“Nuffield Health Taunton Hospital has been serving the local community for over 40 years and we are looking forward to providing major improvements to this disused part of the hospital to ensure that the building is preserved for years to come.”
