KEEN cyclists are being encouraged to get on their bikes for St Margaret’s Great Somerset Cycle and raise vital funds for the hospice.

If every rider raised £100 at the event this Sunday August 6), it would be enough to pay for community care across Somerset for four days.

The 38-mile ride between the charity’s hospices in Yeovil and Bishop's Hull takes in glorious Somerset countryside - and for those who really want a challenge, you can complete the whole 76-mile round trip.

Most of the ride is on quiet B roads, which will be marshalled for safety, while on-course mechanical support will be available.

Richard Wallace, St Margaret’s events manager, said: “This is a brand new event for us and, with the differing start points and distance options, we hope it will appeal to cyclists of all abilities.

"We can’t guarantee the British weather, but rain or shine it should be a beautiful ride that offers stunning views of the Somerset scenery.

“What we can guarantee is that every penny raised will go towards the £7.7 million we need to raise every year to provide vital services to thousands of local people and their families facing a life-limiting illness.”

Registration opens at 8am and the ride will begin at 9am.

Entry is £35 for the 38-mile cycle or £40 for the 76-mile cycle, and cyclists will receive a cycling jersey and medal to celebrate their achievement.
