A YOUNG man who stole coffee and make-up from two supermarkets has avoided jail.

Joseph Sutcliffe, 22 of Union Street in Bridgwater appeared at Taunton Crown Court today (July 28) and admitted he stole large pots of coffee and make up from a Coop store and a Tesco store on June 12 and June 14 and was in breach of his suspended sentence.

The defendant told the court he stole the coffee as he was intending to it sell on to get money so he could buy food.

Sutcliffe was handed an 18 month prison sentence suspended for 18 months in June after he broke into his mother's house while she was out and took a £125 phone which had not been taken out of its packaging.

At the sentencing, Judge David Evans said: "I would consider it unjust for you to serve your suspended sentence.

"But I will warn you again, if you reoffend you will be back here in front of me or in front of Judge Ticehurst, nobody else.

"You will not be able to pull the wool over anyone else's eyes so I suggest you behave."

Sutcliffe was given one days detention for each of the theft offences and the operational period for his suspended sentence was extended from 18 months to 21 months.
