A NEW youth club run by The Salvation Army for Bridgwater moved a step closer this week.

The Salvation Army is looking to set up the new club for school years 7 to 11 in the Sydenham area for one night a week.

On Friday West Somerset Council Cabinet agreed to recommend approval for nearly £20,000 of Community Impact Mitigation funding from EDF to go toward the total cost of £33,000.

Cllr Dave Westcott said: "I am pleased to support this application from the Salvation Army, I think they do great outreach work in the area and will do a really good job with this."

Cllr Martin Dewdney added: "Sydenham is one of the most deprived wards in Sedgemoor and I think this will be a valuable resource for the area."

The Salvation Army application states that the new youth club would provide a safe, fun, social and relaxing space for young people.

A range of activities will be provided to help youngsters develop confidence, run by trained volunteer youth workers who will 'help improve aspirations of young people in the area'.

CIM fund manager Lisa Redston said: "This type of project can be transformational for some young people, and many community organisations are strongly supporting the project."
