PUPILS from West Huntspill Primary School have been hard at work helping a Burnham-on-Sea opticians collect unwanted glasses for charity.

Staff at the school were eager to help Specsavers on High Street in their effort to raise money for Vision Aid Overseas (VAO) and asked their pupils to bring in their unwanted specs.

The opticians acts as a drop off point for the glasses and has collected thousands of pairs for the charity over the last few years.

Rama Venkat, store director at Specsavers in Burnham-on-Sea said: "We're really grateful to West Huntspill for their support.

"It’s great to get the local community involved in the effort as all the money that’s raised from recycling the specs goes towards helping to fund eyecare in the developing world.

"The more pairs of specs that we collect, the more money we can raise."

VAO aims to fight poverty by giving people in developing countries better access to eyecare and raises money by selling materials recycled from old glasses.

James Peake, headteacher of West Huntspill Primary School said: "We’re so pleased to be able to join Specsavers and support VAO.

"We have been involved with the store before, when staff donated 100 high-visibility vests to our pupils, so when the children heard that there was an opportunity to repay their kindness, they jumped at the chance to get involved."
