A CHARD team headed by a golfing daredevil is set to take on the Red Bull Soapbox Race 2017.

The internationally-known event, billed as ‘a race for the wickedly adventurous’, is being held at Alexandra Palace on July 9, and will see competing teams hurtle downhill through London streets on their homemade vehicles fuelled by nothing but gravity.

Clive Fisk is leading the Chard-based team made up of four members of the Cricket St Thomas golf club, and will be piloting their entry, Golf’s Trolley Dollies.

He said: “The soapbox is finished now. The design is based on a golf trolley, not a buggy but a trolley.

“You stand on the back and ride it and the front is an old Red Bull fridge that has been modified so there are some golf clubs sticking out the top.

“We are all members of Cricket St Thomas golf club and we are raising money for Diabetes UK. We are so grateful because the club owner also has MetalTech, so their charitable donation was to make the trolley for free.

“Out of an alleged 7,000 applications they only selected 70 teams and we are one of them.

“The last time the soapbox race was in the UK was 2015 when it was also at Alexandra Palace.

“I have raised money before and I have climbed Kilimanjaro when I was 65. I am retired now but still very active.

“I stumbled across this on TV and thought that looks manic, and then there was an announcement that it was coming back to England and I thought right, let’s have a go.”

Clive, along with Andy, Liam and Daniel, will be dressed as air stewardesses wearing wings, inspired by Red Bull’s famous ‘gives you wings’ slogan.

They will dance to the song Little White Bull, but with lyrics modified to Little Red Bull, before Clive sets off on the trolley.

Red Bull has held more than 100 soapbox races around the world.

A three-hour TV show will be aired on Dave on July 9 from 5pm.
