WEST Somerset College has been working closely with Somerset Rural Youth Project’s National Citizen Service to promote their residential events on Exmoor.

The service provides young people aged 15 – 17 with a chance to live away from home, develop skills to boost their CV and help prepare for college and university.

The programme is run by Somerset Rural Youth Project and takes place over four weeks in the summer holidays.

The programme is split into three phases; the first phase is all about adventure, this will involve camping on Exmoor whilst trying out a range of challenging outdoor activities run by the Channel Group, the second phase is about developing skills for life, this will take place in university style accommodation and will be geared towards independent living and inspiring the young people for their future careers, phase three is a non-residential where young people will project manage their own social action project in their communities.

On completion of the programme participants will receive a certificate that is recognised by employers and universities.

To sign up contact Somerset Rural Youth Project on 01278 722100 or email ncs@sryp.org.uk.

Sally Scyner, Head of Post 16 at the College said “It’s fantastic to see our students working together, with the help of the Rural Youth Project, on such a variety of events. The enthusiasm of the project staff is infectious and our students are keen to get involved."
