A POPULAR weekly car boot sale is having to be relocated for the second time in a month after travellers moved onto the site where it is held.

The event at the former St Augustine of Canterbury School, on Lyngford Road, Taunton, is taking place at Taunton Rugby Club's Hyde Park HQ in Bathpool this Friday.

Organiser Paul Goodyear, of Paul's Promotions, said he had no choice but to move after travellers encamped on the former school field on Monday and following a fire at 12.17pm today (Wednesday).

The fire, which is believed to have been an arson attack, started when a pile of rubbish was set alight and has caused damage to the outside of an unoccupied building.

Mr Goodyear said: "We're relocating this Friday because the travellers have said they're staying until Saturday.

"We've lost our portable loos at St Augustine's as they were destroyed in the fire.

"We're unsure what's happening next week - it's a question of watch this space.

"But it's an ongoing problem as it's the second time there have been travellers on the site in a month.

"As the organisers we're asking, 'Is it worth running the car boot sales there if it continues like this or should we relocate totally?'.

"If it's a success at the rugby club this Friday, we would negotiate with the club with a view to possibly relocating there permanently."

Friday's car boot sale at Taunton Rugby Club starts at 4.30pm for sellers and 5pm for buyers, with the sellers' fee reduced to £4 to compensate for any inconvenience.
