A CAR has been badly damaged after a fire in Bridgwater.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called at 2.33pm today (May 22) to Beech Business Park in Bridgwater after reports of a fire on Bristol Road. 

Firefighters from Bridgwater were mobilised to the incident. 

On arrival crews confirmed smoke and flames were issuing from the car.

Firefighters quickly set to work to extinguish the fire using breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet.

Fire crews confirmed the fire was extinguished by 2.36pm and the vehicle was removed by Highways England.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "We were called just after 2pm to reports of a fire on Bristol Road. 

"Fire crews were already in attendance. 

"Bristol Road was closed in both directions at 2.22pm and it reopened at 2.50pm."

The cause of the fire is thought to be accidental.
