A MAN accused of leading police on a chase going so fast round a roundabout that he skidded, denied he had been the driver when he appeared in court.

Jake Field allegedly drove on the wrong side of the road, overtook other vehicles dangerously and went straight through red lights without stopping in Chard.

Another vehicle had to pull in to avoid a collision and the pursuit continued until he reached a dead end and fled the scene.

Field, 23, of Ashcroft, was charged that on September 11, 2016, he drove a Citroen Saxo dangerously on East Street, A358 Millfield and Mill Lane.

He was also charged of being failed to stop in Henson Park when asked by police.

Further allegations of using a vehicle without insurance or a licence were alleged when he appeared in the dock before District Judge David Taylor, sitting at Yeovil.

Field did not enter any pleas, and defending solicitor Neil Priest said that the defendant claimed it had not been him in the driver’s seat at the time of the alleged offences.

The district judge said the case was so serious that Field should stand trial at Taunton Crown Court and adjourned the case until May 22 when he must appear before a pre trial hearing there.

In the meantime he was released on unconditional bail.
