VULNERABLE people in South Somerset are set to benefit from £5,000 in funding for new smoke alarms.

South Somerset Careline has secured the grant from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service to work in partnership to improve home safety for South Somerset District Council customers.

In 2015, Careline was awarded an initial grant to help pay for the installation of smoke alarms in customers’ homes.

In the past year, 156 people were referred to the fire service for a Home Safety Visit, and 149 free smoke detectors which link directly to Careline’s control centre were installed.

The new funding will enable Careline to continue to support vulnerable people by installing a further 250 smoke detectors.

Matt Evans, station manager at the fire service, said: “We are really pleased to be working so successfully in partnership with South Somerset Careline. Working together we will continue to help vulnerable people in our community.”
