BRIDGWATER Baptist Church was the venue for this year’s Mayor’s Civic Service with many of Bridgwater’s great and good coming out to support the event.

Bridgwater Mayor mayor Alex Glassford read a speech at Sunday’s service called ‘Connecting Cultures’ before giving a speech urging people to look for the positives in the challenges Bridgwater faces.

“As I said in a recent interview, the people of Bridgwater are a resilient bunch, they can deal with changes and just get on with it,” Mayor Glassford said.

“Hinkley C is causing chaos on the roads at the moment but long term we will see a huge amount of job opportunities and chances for businesses to expand,” he said.

Mayor Glassford gave a moving recollection of the death of his own mother, and how since her passing he had always looked for the positives in any situation, and encouraged others to do the same.

The service featured a hymns and prayers led by the mayor’s chaplain Rev Rosemary Eaton, while singer Elaine Di Campo performed renditions of Imagine by John Lennon and, especially for Scottish native mayor Glassford, The Proclaimers’ 500 Miles.

Those attending the service were then invited to join the mayor for tea and cakes in the Church Hall.
