BURNHAM-on-Sea Coastguard rushed to Brean earlier today after recieving reports of two people cut off by the tide.

The team were called at 3.50pm and quickly moved to Brean Down along with two RNLI lifeboats to assist two people who had become cut off by a fast incoming tide on the south side of Brean Down.

A spokesman from Burnham-on-Sea Coastguard said: "With the tide still incoming all teams moved quickly to Brean Down, two Lifeboats crossed the bay and our Mobile Response Unit (MRU) all arrived in good time.

"Our Station Officer who was nearby went directly to scene and spoke to the first informant, who pointed out where the two people were.

"Both persons were in view and at the base of the Down for sometime while the rescue units were en-route.

"Just a few moments before our arrival one started to climb the side of the down and after a short time it became apparent they were actually climbers.

"Often they will walk out during low tide and climb the down while the tide is in, and then safely make their way back once it has receded, as they were both on the base with their equipment out of view it was not obvious they were climbers and was easy to think they were cut off.

"The first informant was apologetic and thought she had wasted our time, but in fact had 100 per cent made the right call.

"The lifeboats did a quick search of the south side of the Down to ensure there was no one else and then we all stood down and returned to station."
