SUPERMARKET giant Aldi has submitted formal plans to build a new store in Highbridge.

The discount store, which would be built on the junction between Isleport Road and Bennett Road, could create up to 40 new jobs if the application is approved by Sedgemoor District Council.

No official opening date has been announced by the supermarket, which would also include car parking and an access road if approved.

The potential new store has received a mixed reaction from residents.

The supermarket carried out a leaflet survey of local residents regarding the new store, and claims 95 per cent of the 530 people who responded agreed the store would be an asset to Highbridge, and hoped it would bring new jobs to the town.

A spokesman for ALDI said: “ The leaflet has been very well received by the product team, it has had a great response.

“We are delighted to be progressing plans for a new ALDI in Highbridge, to give local people easier access to the popular ALDI offer.

“ Our consultation highlighted that 95% of local people can’t wait to shop and save with ALDI and we hope local residents will now take the opportunity to let the Council know their views.”

The low budget supermarket chain plans to build a new superstore with access and car parking facilities and said the new store could create up to 40 new jobs and could lead to further business development in Highbridge.

The new store is set to be based on empty land at the junction between Isleport Road and Bennett Road in Highbridge.

John Parkes, Councillor for Highbridge from Burnham and Highbridge Town Council said he supports any new business in the town but has his reservations about the project.

“As I said at the recent planning committee meeting, I feel a comprehensive retail assessment needs to be made before the store is approved.

“I wonder how much of an impact such a big store would have on smaller stores in Highbridge.

“According to local press and from those who have returned their leaflets, 95% of people agreed with the store coming to Highbridge and a lot of people clearly think it is a sensible option.

“One of my concerns is that the store is some way out of Highbridge town centre and how much transport may be used to get there.

“I am all for any new business coming to Highbridge but I want to know how much of an affect it will have on other businesses in Highbridge, that is my main fear.”

Comments are welcome on the planning application until February 10 and the plans will then be under consultation by Sedgemoor District Council.
