ONE of Taunton's most iconic stores has announced it plans to remain open for the foreseeable future, following plans to close this month.

The County Gazette revealed in September 2016 that County Stores proposed to close, saying the high street retail environment had become very challenging.

Readers reacted with shock and sadness to the news, with many writing it to recall their happy memories at the store.

But bosses say they have been "overwhelmed with support" urging them to stay open.

The shop, which has been trading in Taunton since the mid-1850s, has announced it will continue trading this year, but is still looking for new tenants.

County Stores director, James Duder, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the huge amount of support from customers and staff who expressed sorrow at the proposed closure and urged us to stay open.

“Although long term we are still looking for prospective tenants to take over the premises, we are listening to all those who have said they want the Stores to stay open, and people will now have the opportunity to show their support and enjoy the unique ambience of the County Stores.”

The County Stores was once known as the "Harrods of the West Country",  and looked as if it was going to become another high street casualty of 2016 following the demise of BHS from Taunton, Austin Reed and Thorntons, which is closing soon.

James said he was particularly grateful to many of the 61 staff who had stayed loyal to the business and have continued to work throughout this challenging period.

The Post Office will also remain open inside the shop and is run as part of the Taunton business.

The two petrol stations owned by the company at Curry Rivel and Williton are not affected.
