DURING the last week of term, Haygrove School turned the volume up to 11 for their annual School of Rock concert.

Tickets were sold out for the event showcasing the musical talents of students across all year groups.

The theme of this year’s battle of the bands was ‘Best of British’, and for some of the Year 7 students that took part, this was the first time performing to a crowd since starting to learn their instruments at the beginning of term.

The night was kick-started by one of two staff bands who performed Oasis’s classic ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’. The night showed no signs of calming down, with the music getting the audience cheering, toe tapping and hand clapping along to an array of covers of both new and old British rock anthems.

Each student band was judged by a panel of guests consisting of guitar teacher Craig Barnett, Sedgemoor FM DJ Dave Englefield and ex-Haygrove student and former Head Girl Francesca Smith who praised the students on their amazing performances and commented that many had really developed their musical talents over the last few years.

The trophy for ‘Best Band Image’ went to Year 7 girl-band The Cordettes, while ‘Best Guitar Solo’ was given jointly to guitar-playing duo in Spoken by Six.

The prestigious ‘School of Rock Champions 2016’ trophy was awarded to Year 10/11 band ‘Lightbulbs of Sound’ who recently performed at the Bridgwater Christmas Lights switch-on event.
