AN inspirational Bridgwater and Taunton police officer has retired this month after 26 years’ service with the force.

Avon and Somerset Inspector Andy Smith worked mainly in the neighbourhood and response areas during his career.

Chief Superintendent Ian Wylie said Insp Smith would be missed by his colleagues and the communities he worked in.

“Andy was an inspiration to all aspiring young leaders; his personal style was one of exacting standards combined with an incredible warmth, humility and genuine care for those who worked with him and for those he served,” he said.

“Andy would be far too modest to admit that he did any more than his day job but I know those who have worked with Andy would share my sentiments and my good wishes for his next chapter beyond policing.”

Andy was also awarded a leadership commendation on his final day to show the force’s appreciation for the work he has done serving the public and supporting his staff.

Chief Supt Wylie added: “As we all know, the challenges of policing remain ever present and the requirement for great leadership has never been more important.

“As I visit the areas and stations across Somerset, I see this style of leadership present every day, which bodes well for the organisation as we continue to navigate the choppy waters of change.”

Andy will be taking up a new role working outside of the police, but still in the Taunton area, with the support of his wife and grown-up daughter and son.
