Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service have shown their support for a campaign to prevent incidents of drowning under the influence of alcohol.

The fire service are working in partnership with the Royal Life Saving Society as the 'Don't Drink and Drown' campaign was launched at Plymouth University on December 7.

It has been identified nationally and across the south west there is a growing problem among young people between the ages of 16 and 24 drowning with alcohol in their systems.

Watch Manager Dan Searle, of Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service, with the help of Blue Watch from Camels Head, were in attendance at the university to support the launch.

Firefighters handed out leaflets and glow in the dark wristbands spreading the Don’t Drink and Drown message with RLSS colleagues and their mascot.

Dan Searle said: "This is a campaign that we hope will grow as will the partnership that has been formed between ourselves, the RNLI and RLSS.

"This is a particular problem as we head towards Christmas and we wanted to spread the message as well as deliver some Christmas cheer."

The campaign was launched nationally on December 5 and has been rolled out across a number of key universities across the country.
