DEVON and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to be vigilant and protect themselves from fire risks over the festive season.

Their tips include: *keep decorations and cards away from heaters, lights, fireplaces and candles as they burn easily.

*never leave candles unattended.

*switch off fairy lights and unplug them before you go to bed or leave the house. Check your Christmas tree lights conform to the British Standard (BS EN 60598).

*don’t let bulbs touch anything that can burn easily, such as paper or fabrics.

*use a residual current device (RCD) on outdoor electrical equipment - it instantly switches off the power if there is a fault.

*don’t overload sockets – ensure only one plug per socket and turn off when not in use.

*make sure cigarettes are extinguished properly and never smoke in bed.

*in the event of fire get out, stay out and call 999.

Householders are also urged to plan an escape route and make sure your family and visitors know what to do in an emergency and ensure there is a working smoke alarm on all levels of the home, which should be tested regularly.
